Illustrated here is labTREAT LT25 pH adjustment system mounted on a skid with optional chemical day tanks.

System Performance Specifications :

Influent Characteristics : Flow 0-300, 25 GPM Nominal Flow. Influent pH 2-12 pH units. Temperature 32-190 F. 

Effluent Characteristics : Flow, Continuous flow normally equal to the influent flow rate, peak flows to 50 GPM when intermittently operating in the Batch mode.  pH, Nominal discharge range is 6.50 - 8.50 pH units. (Actual discharge limit is field programmable)

Effluent Monitoring : As mandated by the local controlling authority the effluent quality must be continuously monitored. A two pen recorder is to be used to monitor effluent flow rate and pH. The recorder is to be equipped with a flow totalizer. Any effluent pH deviations will trigger an alarm and system discharge will be halted.

The labTREAT family of pH Adjustment systems are designed to handle the unique characteristics of laboratory and semi-conductor fab effluent waste streams.

The system displayed here is our high temperature version of our venerable  labTREAT LT25pH adjustment system, capable of treating flows up to 25 gpm average flow. This family of pH adjustment systems can handle flows up to 300 gpm peak. Although actual throughput is a function of water chemistry. The labTREAT family of pH Adjustment systems all utilize our proprietary "Optimized Hybrid Batch" pH adjustment technology.

Note: Our standard systems are rated to 140oF; all of our systems are available in high temperature designs as well. All of our systems are available in materials of construction that will perform well at temperatures above 200F.

These systems are well suited for high flows of  acidic or  alkaline effluents, such as research laboratories, university science labs, semi-conductor fabs, etc.

Utilities, Weight, Dimensions : Electrical : 480VAC, 3phase, 60hz, 15 amp. Disconnect not required, provided on MCP.

Air : Less than 1 SCFM @ 80 PSIG. No special requirements for air quality.

Dimensions : 60" x 120" x 80"(h). Access to the front of the skid and the both sides is required for ease of service. Dimensions do not include the Main Control Panel which can be mounted anywhere on the system perimeter or a nearby wall.

Weight : Approx. 1,400 lbs. dry. (not inc. shipping crate).

 

The system is supplied as a completely fabricated "turnkey" package. Therefore all devices are wired and plumbed upon shipping. There is a single electrical connection point for incoming power, no further terminations are required. The disconnect on the MCP provides OSHA Lock Out / Tag Out and NFPA 79 compliance. Likewise for air, only one termination point is provided and required and a valve is supplied for OSHA LOTO.. The actual air flow requirements are quite low.
Construction: Skid : A steel skid is provided for supporting the entire system. The skid  features a welded 4" Steel "C" channel frame, a 1/4" steel deck plate, and a 1-1/2" box tube frame. Pipe and conduit supports are provided by heavy duty unistrut rails. The entire skid is bead blasted, primed, and coated with a 2 part epoxy finish for corrosion resistance. The skid color is normally OSHA Safety Blue unless otherwise specified.

Containment Pan : A Polypropylene (PP) containment / drip pan is provided for insulating the steel skid from leaking or spilled corrosive fluids and for containment of leaks. A floor drain is provided for draining the containment pan to a sump. The pan is fabricated from 1/2" PP and features 8" high walls.

Treatment Tank: The treatment tank is a custom fabricated PP  vessel.  The tank is supplied with a 2" gasketed lip for sealing the cover.  The tank is designed for fluids with a s.g. of up to 1.9 with a safety factor of 2:1.  The tank top is reinforced and gasketed. The top will support all mounted equipment and the weight of one 200lb. man without significant deflection. The system shown here is fabricated from PP, however, all commercially available materials are available including stainless steel, exotic alloys and all thermoplastics (PE, FRP, PVC, etc).

Reagent Storage Tanks : Chemicals for treatment are pumped directly from 55 gallon DOT drums using our unique suction wands. An alternate to pumping directly from DOT drums is utilization of day tanks which can be automatically refilled from customers bulk chemical delivery system within the plant. Redundant level sensors and redundant fill valves provide protection against overfilling. 

Piping : All recirculation, transfer and discharge lines are fabricated from solvent welded CPVC SCH 80 pipe. Threaded fittings are not used unless absolutely necessary. All reagent delivery lines are flexible PFA tube double contained within a clear  flexible PVC hose, clamped at each end to seal leaks. Alternate piping systems are available and commonly used.

Valves : All ball valves are true union field serviceable valves. All diaphragm valves are flange mounted. Elastomers are EPDM and Teflon except on concentrated acid lines where the elastomers are Viton and / or Teflon. Alternate piping systems are available and commonly used.

Electrical : All enclosures are NEMA 4X, where metallic enclosures are used they are provided with epoxy or polyester finishes for corrosion resistance. All conduit is plastic coated where possible. Low voltage 24VDC is used throughout to minimize service personnel exposure to high voltage. All panels are OSHA LOTO and NFPA 79 compliant, additionally UL-508 listing is available.

 

Process Description : The pH adjustment system featured here is an "Optimized Hybrid Batch" pH adjustment system. This technology, developed by Digital Analysis Corp., couples the simplicity and efficiency of continuous flow through design with the inherent safety of "Optimized Batch" system design. All continuous flow through designs are plagued by one major weakness and that is the inability to shut down discharge flow. Since the treatment tank of a continuous flow through system is always full, one gallon of influent flow will displace one gallon of effluent. This occurs regardless of effluent pH. Therefore, if somebody decides to dump to drain a chemistry that the system can't possibly handle due to the concentration then an effluent contravention will occur. 

The "Hybrid" Batch design will shut down discharge flow whenever the effluent pH becomes unstable or approaches the effluent limits. The flow then begins to back up into the treatment tanks while an equilibrium is re-established. Typically 5 minutes of reserve volume is provided for. Once an equilibrium is reestablished and the treatment system pH re-stabilizes discharge flow resumes. This system architecture is not designed for effluent streams that fluctuate wildly in flow or influent chemistry. Rather these are designed for effluent streams that have relatively constant or slow changing flow and relatively constant or slowly changing chemistry. Streams that are characterized by concentrated discharges or batch discharges are best treated with one of our "Optimized Batch" pH adjustment systems from our pHASE or batchTREAT family of pH adjustment / neutralization systems.

This system uses two "Optimized" Control Loops. The first is a feed-forward loop that uses incoming pH and flow rate in an intelligent algorithm to provide coarse treatment of the incoming waste water. This stage, although not terribly accurate does neutralize the majority of the alkalinity or acidity of the influent stream.  The second control loop is a feed-back loop using bi-directional, multi-segmented control band characterization. This allows a user to program in a typical titration curve for optimum response. The system then constantly makes minor changes to these settings based on influent response. This provides very precise control over the pH of the effluent resulting in a very efficiently and accurately controlled system.
